Surrealism
- founded in 1924 by AndrĂ© Breton.
- a type of cultural movement and artistic style.
- uses visual imagery from the subconscious mind to create art without the intention of logical comprehensibility.
- influenced by Jung and Freud’s writings regarding dreams and the subconscious.
- famous artists in Surrealist movement included Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Joan Miro, Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico, and many more.

Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Salvador Dali was a flamboyant and groundbreaking Spanish painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and designer. He took over the Surrealist theory of automatism but transformed it into 'critical paranoia'. Below was his most famous masterpiece produced in 1931:

“The Persistence of Memory"

Symbolism abounds in the eerie, melting images of pioneering Surrealist artist Salvador Dali’s most famous work, “The Persistence of Memory.” Creating “hand-painted dream photographs,” Dali (1904 – 1989) portrayed fantastic visions made believable through expert rendering. Captivated by scientific breakthroughs Dali, though always evasive on theories of the painting’s meaning, may have been illustrating Einstein’s theory that time is relative, and not fixed. Elements of Design

1. Line- lines are smooth and form shapes like clocks, cliffs, pedestal, branches, mountains, ants and a 'sleeping swan'.
2. Shapepositive and negative shape is well balanced, with clocks, shelf and mountains being positive.
3. Direction- the clocks, shelf and mountains are in horizontal which suggests calmness and stability.
4. Size-the area occupied by the objects are well drawn.
5. Texture- the clocks, pedestals, shelf are smooth whereas the branches and mountains portray a little of roughness in the picture.
6. Colourranges from blues and yellows to siennas and blacks.
7. Value/Tone- the tone can be seen in the shadows.

Principles of Design
1. Balance- asymmetrical established by the heaviness of the larger pedestal against the lighter cliffs placed at the diagonally opposite side of the painting.
2. Gradation- the branches pointing to the mountains and the shelf pointing to the draped clock direct eyes around the picture.
3. Repetition- clocks is used as a repetition in this picture.
4. Contrast- sharp contrast between light and dark seen on the mountains
5. Harmony- the picture looks harmony with the colour used.
6. Dominance- the soft and melting clock.
7. Unity- the picture shows unity with the colour and objects used and the branches pointing to the mountain links the whole picture.

My 1st Photoshop-ed Picture.

Like the photo of me in the first post? =D
It's edited!
 Do you notice the difference?

HAHA! yeah, Aunty Linnet [Rachael's mummy!] is missing and the picture sharper on the right. I'll show the steps I did to edit the picture:

Removing unwanted objects:
Tool used: Clone Stamp Tool
I used Clone Stamp Tool to clone away Aunty Linnet by pressing Alt+click on the area I want to copy, and then paint on the target areas.

Making the picture clearer:
Tool used: Photo Filter
1. Firstly, I duplicated the background copy.
2. After that, I went to Layers Palette and created a New Adjustment Layer and clicked on Photo Filter. I chose Warming Filter (85) for Filter and 25% for Density.
3. Then, I duplicated the layer and changed the new layer to Overlay.
4. I adjusted the Opacity to 50%.

and......TADAA!!! hope it's not too disappointing.=]

p/s: it's my first time using blog as well as Adobe Photoshop and still in familiarize process, help me to improve ya. ^^

Welcome myself!

First post, FIRST POST!!

I want to thank this subject for allowing? forcing? me to start up a blog. Have been thinking to blog few years back, but procrastination and laziness drag me to nowhere, and now, I'll need to have one as part of my assignment. Big thank you to you, HAA 102 Introduction to Design. This blog could survive at least 3 months. haha~ I was told that this blog gives us a space to write down what we are going to do throughout the semester for this subject, how the ideas come up, how we complete the projects, so I wish this will be able to help me to keep track on my works.=]
oh oh, I think I should talk about myself a little and I'll try my best to not making this blog sounds too academic. haha~

I enjoy spending time with family and friends because I find it really relaxing and carefree being with them. Dont need to be big, special or happening gatherings or meet ups, just a simple one will do. I love meeting new people too. I enjoy all sorts of activities and events. I like dancing but not really good in it. =(.

sports!!  I love the sweaty feel after exercising, that's just so refreshing! I wish I could play musical instruments too. I learned melodica during primary school time, but I hope I could learn at least one other type of musical instruments one day. Talking about drawing and designing, I love to do so too, the problem is that most of the times the outcomes are just so discouraging, so I hope through this subject could gain me back some satisfaction and confidence.

"It's a long long journey, till I know where I supposed to be."
Im still searching for a clear direction in my life. I've been struggling very hard to choose a course like many others do. I found myself to be interested in a lot of fields and they can have big differences among themselves. For now, I've picked psychology as my degree course. Undoubtedly, learning about humans is just so interesting as we meet H.U.M.A.N everyday. Im still considering to enter which field related to psychology though. Child area? Human resource management? Training and consultation? Im still finding my way out, but of course, to help people and benefit the society as well as to earn money!

Everyone has their own aspirations, so am I. I dont have mighty wish like those pageants wishing for world peace, but of course I hope world will stay peace especially hearing so many news about bombing and terrorist attacks recently.=D Providing family and myself a comfortable living standard is my biggest wish, at least for now. After that, play my part as a good citizen: contribute to the community. hehe~

hmm, after talking so much things which Im not sure if there's anyone who will read from top to bottom, I shall introduce myself. HAHA.
I am Lu Yi ! ^^
